It’s Official, Yahoo Acquires Tumblr In $1.1 Billion Deal

Guess the speculation was true. Yahoo has officially acquired Tumblr in a $1.1 billion deal according to an official statement from Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer.

Promising to “not screw up”, Yahoo said: “Tumblr is incredibly special and has a great thing going. We will operate Tumblr independently. David Karp will remain CEO. The product roadmap, their team, their wit and irreverence will all remain the same as will their mission to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve. Yahoo! will help Tumblr get even better, faster.”

It also said that Yahoo has plans to “deploy its personalization technology and search infrastructure to Tumblr”, allowing users to find relevant content more easily.

As for Tumblr, it will bring “50 billion blog posts, 300 million monthly unique visitors and 120,000 daily signups” to the search engine giant.

As previously mentioned, Yahoo reportedly had an “aging demographic” and it believed that a Tumblr acquisition would help attract more users from the “18-to-24-years-old age bracket”.

What do you think of Yahoo’s acquisition of Tumblr? Would it benefit both companies?
