Weird Paintings By Neo Rauch Are Both Mesmerizing and Beautiful

An unusual combination of realist and surrealist styles, Neo Rauch’s paintings often depict 1950s socialist era figures against strange backdrops of landscapes and architecture.

His fluid grasp on scale and perspective make the paintings even more unreal, yet there is a puzzling and unexpected familiarity that resonates from within them.

It is hard to figure out what is happening in his paintings, let alone understand it.

Nevertheless, his work is mesmerizing and beautiful and they are definitely well worth a ponder.
