A Building Made With A Large Pile Of Sand, Naturally Keeps Guests Cool

For this year’s Design Miami collectors’ fair, New York architectural studio formlessfinder designed an unexpected entrance pavilion—it will be made with a pile of sand.

Inspired by the place it is located at, the temporary ‘Tent Pile’ pavilion will be created at Miami Beach and take on a pyramid shape.

Using 500-tons of sand and an aluminium roof to top it, the pavilion will also be supported by a retaining wall for safety purposes—and its designers hope that it will be a literally cool and sheltered place for guests.

According to a statement, the sand will make the interior space of the pavilion cool, as it provides shade and allows air to be drawn in—keeping guests comfortable while saving on electricity.

“We’re trying to shift away from form so that we can explore other qualities of architecture,” Julian Rose, cofounder of formlessfinder said in a statement, “such as new ways of experiencing space or innovative ways of using materials.”

Ingenious and innovative, the sand building probably hints at how inhabitants of the desert keep cool—what do you think?
