An App That Uses Geometry To Banish Creative Blocks

Say goodbye to creative blocks with Reform, a web and mobile app for designers that uses geometric puzzles to reshape their thinking.

Tim Drabandt of Type Machine, the makers of the app, drew inspiration from the teachings of Swiss instructor and graphic designer Igildo G Biesele, who had his students create simple abstract compositions using polygons and lines. He was drawn to how a simple system could produce complex results.

Reform elevates that principle by setting minimalist shapes on bold solid-colored bachgrounds and having users add their own background images. The shape designs are drawn from geometric sans, with each shape circumscribed in block units that are spread across three rows. Users can combine elements vertically or horizontally, or cut through them.

This fluidity encourages users to think locally or globally to create either a holistic composition or several combinations, generating visual ideas in the process.
