Artist Exhibits Tiny Paintings Inside The Ear Of A Woman

Los Angeles-based artist Joe Sola is exhibiting some of his oil paintings in the unlikeliest of places—inside a woman’s ear.

Ranging from 4/64 x 5/64-inches to 11/128 x 5.64-inches, six micro paintings will be “hung” instead the ear canal gap of gallerist Tif Sigfrid.

According to Sola, he said that his works were so small, that they had to be painting using a stereo microscope. “I had to build my own brushes that could handle such small amounts of paint; single bristles and hairs were far too large,” he said.

“I ended up using a .12-millimeter acupuncture needle, which is the smallest acupuncture needle available. That needle narrows down to a point that still too large to paint with so I sanded that tip, under the microscope, to an even narrower point to construct the tool I needed.”

Innovation or gross? We’ll leave you to decide.

This tiny exhibit will be show at Sigrid’s Gallery from 12 October to 9 November 2013.
