Extraordinary Landscapes Sculpted From Books

Interdisciplinary artist Guy Laramée is known for his intricate book carvings of mountainous landscapes. His new set of book carvings pays tribute to legendary Chinese poet, Han Shan.

The hermit poet Han Shan’s name translates to ‘Cold Mountain’, and he was a man of Nature whose profound philosophies greatly inspired Laramée.

“Deeply touched by Han Shan’s poetry, I humbly tried, not to illustrate them, but to paint and carve from the very place where he stood. Han Shan showed me that every place can be a Cold Mountain, every person a hermit and every moment a moon light party,” said Laramée.

Laramée’s meticulous sculptures seem a bit darker than his previous set, but he plays with light on some of these ‘landscapes’, and the presence of the ‘moon’ makes them even more ethereal.
