‘Type:Rider’ is a game for iOS and Android that encourages people to learn about the history of typography, ‘Super Mario’-style.
Billed as the “Final Fontasy” of video games, players play as two dots across 10 different worlds that correspond to key periods of typographic history and a specific font, from the rock paintings of the prehistoric era to the Fritz Lang Metropolis-style setting of the Roaring Twenties.
Like in any platform game, their task is to solve a series of riddles by riding popular fonts like Garamond, Helvetica, Times New Roman, and Futura. Players amass power-ups along the way via pages from a book on the history of typography, which also reads like an e-book after the game is completed.
A combination of various fonts are imaginatively weaved into the game’s design—for example, players may be required to navigate a series of K’s that swing over a pit, or ride a roller-coaster of interlinked S’s.
“Typography is an old and invisible art that only a few people really know, but the history of letters is, in the end, the history of mankind”, said Théo Le Du Fuentes, a Parisian designer who worked on ‘Type:Rider’. “That's why we set out to create a game that allows players to learn about the history of type while literally exploring it.”
The explorative nature of the game allows people to learn about the long and complex history of typography in a fun way, and Du Fuentes hopes that they will choose their next fonts with care and knowledge after playing it.
‘Type:Rider’ is available on iTunes Store and Google Play.
