To prevent road accidents from occurring, would-be drivers of Sierra Leone have to play a board game, “The Driver’s Way”, before they get their licence.

Conceived by Morie Lenghor, Assistant Inspector General of the police, this board game has players moving around game pieces that look like cars and rolling dice in the color of traffic lights to familiarize themselves with the highway code.

Influenced by games like "Monopoly" and "Snakes And Ladders", these "cars" even go through “vehicle tests” which result in fines, should the player’s "vehicles" be faulty.

Realizing that many people did not like to read, yet did not know of the country's traffic rules, Lenghor decided to come up with a game to attract people to help them “study” before getting their driving license.

The game costs US$14, and 3,000 copies have been imported to other countries.

Sarah Bendu, the executive director of Sierra Leone’s Road Transport Authority, hopes that many novice drivers would use this game to prepare for their driver’s test.

Why not? This fun idea certainly makes studying the highway code seem less like a chore.
