Photographer Damages His Negatives To Produce Surreal, Abstract Photos

When photographer Rohn Meijer developed a roll of photographs from negatives that had been exposed to 15 years worth of moisture damage, he was greatly inspired by their strangely beautiful effects.

Meijer began experimenting with ways to replicate these effects, and eventually came up with a home-made solution of water and chemicals that he could soak his negatives in. The resulting photographs resembled astral projections of surreal figures, with mottled, bleeding colors producing different effects.

The process is very unpredictable, as there are chances of the negatives being completely destroyed. “Ninety percent of them I toss,” said Meijer.

However, with years of experience, Meijer learnt how to alter his chemical solution to produce optimistic results. He has compiled his abstract photographs in a series titled ‘Metamorphosis’ that can be viewed in full on his website.
