17-year-old Sam Berns is a talented child who is a great LEGO builder, a good student and a loving son. He also suffers from Progeria, an extremely rare genetic disease that causes accelerated aging.
In the documentary film ‘Life According to Sam’, which shows today on HBO, Sam and his parents tell viewers his story.
As Sam is a LEGO lover, the colorful blocks are used as metaphors in the film. “LEGOs are simple and he’s in [that] world without anything else around him. You’re not even looking at him fully yet. You’re seeing parts of him and parts of LEGOs. It’s quite complex what he’s building and it’s large and you really feel that he’s complex,” filmmaker Sean Fine comments.
Sam’s mother has dedicated her life to studying the disease, and founded the Progeria Research Foundation (PRF) with the help of her family.
Sam’s resilient attitude and love for life will surely warm your heart. Watch a trailer for the film below.
