Design studio Sagmiester & Walsh was recently commissioned to produce two impressive, 80-foot-long murals by DUMBO Improvement District—in partnership with Two Trees Management Co and the NYCDOT Urban Art Program—to be painted on the walls of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway underpass.
Enlisting the talent of famous Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu, who created two large-scale typographic designs for the project, the studio was able to transformed a previously uninspiring public space into a stunning outdoor gallery.
Painted by artist Coby Kennedy, both the murals display the word “yes”—while the positive word is spelled out with gigantic Octopus tentacles against a background of rolling waves on one wall, it was rendered in stark white against a black background on the other.
