Artist Deborah Simon’s works are part taxidermy, toy, and sculpture. Fascinated by evolution, she tries to “create an unnervingly accurate but slightly off version of the natural animal”.
Her strikingly realistic bear sculptures are made from polymer clay, faux fur, linen, embroidery floss, acrylic paint, glass, wire and foam, and each are about 22” in height. The bears wear linen “coats” showing their blood stream, internal organs, and bones.
Each sculpture was named after its related species’ scientific name—“Ursus maritimus” for polar bear, “Ursus arctos horribilis” for grizzly bear, and “Ursus americanus” for American black bear.
