In August 2014, London-based photographer Toby Smith travelled to Yiwu, China, with nomadic design research studio Unknown Fields Division, and managed to take a peek at what goes on behind the scenes of Christmas toymaking.
The result of their trip is a project titled ‘Xmas Unwrapped’, a political look at how Western consumerist culture affects industries in China.
Set to the tune of a Cantonese version of ‘Jingle Bells’, this video is described by Smith as “more of a jab at Western Consumption than Chinese production”.
