Six design and animation studios in London have come up with a quirky 10-second animation detailing the birth of a superhero for a speed animation contest held in front of a live audience.
The teams were from Golden Wolf, Fred & Eric, Blackmeal, Territory, Animade, and Mummu. They worked on the animation during several sessions over a four-week period, and the challenge was to use the latest HP Workstation technology to show the different stages of a superhero’s life from birth to old age.
The final clip was unveiled at the London’s Hero Closing Event held at ZED, HP’s pop-up studio. The teams had only seen a few style frames from each other prior to the screening, so there was a great deal of excitement at how the finished animation would turn out.
It opened with the ‘Baby’ stage from Blackmeal featuring the newborn hero using his powers to create an umbrella to shield against pigeon droppings. The ‘Child’ stage from Mummu saw the hero battle and subdue a giant pigeon with his umbrella against the backdrop of Trafalgar Square.
Fred & Eric came up with a stop-motion sequence for the hero’s ‘Teenage’ years, showing an irresponsible youngster abandoning his superhero duties to lounge in his bedroom, while the ‘Young Adult’ stage from Animade saw the hero in his prime saving London while wearing a ‘I heart London’ t-shirt and red underwear.
In the ’Midlife’ stage from Territory, the hero suffers from a mid-life crisis against a futuristic backdrop; he experiences balding and an expanding waistline. Finally, Golden Wolf depicted the hero in his ‘Senior’ years enjoying a pint in a London bar.
Though each segment had different styles and character design, the whole animation had a strong cohesion and flowed smoothly. As for the hero’s lack of a name, none of the studios could agree on one, meaning London’s Hero has to stay anonymous for now.
