Infographic: Common Causes Of Death According To Each US State

Ben Blatt, a Slate staff writer, has created ‘death maps’–maps that illustrate the most common causes of death according to each US state.

With data from a 2008 CDC report, heart disease and cancer take the top two spots for causes of death in every state. They account for far higher mortality statistics than the combination of the next eight causes of death.

The other eight causes of death, according to the report, are: “chronic lower respiratory diseases” (respiratory diseases), “cerebrovascular diseases” (stroke), “accidents,” “Alzheimer’s disease,” “diabetes mellitus” (diabetes), “influenza and pneumonia,” “nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis” (kidney diseases), and “septicemia”.
