Nigeria-based artist El Anatsui turns unsightly litter into art by using recycled bottle caps to piece together his beautiful, large-scale metallic tapestries.
From afar, the artist’s works resemble shiny, patterned pieces of fabric, but upon closer inspection, one would see that they are made up of thousands of tiny, flattened bottle caps from alcoholic drinks.
Not all of Anatsui’s pieces will fit into a gallery—some of his more massive artworks had to be displayed on the streets of cities like New York, Paris and Venice.
His latest exhibition is currently housed at Jack Shainman Gallery, New York City and will run until 19 January—view more of his impressive bottle cap art on the gallery’s website.
