US toy manufacturing giant Mattel has set up the world’s first Barbie Cafe in Taipei, Taiwan, where its dolls were originally manufactured.

Located in the shopping district of the city, Mattel hopes to promote Barbie as a fashion brand.

The staff who work in Barbie Cafe will have Barbie logo T-shirts, logo armbands, matching tutus, glitter and tiaras as part of their uniform.

“We picked Taiwan because theme restaurants are very popular and successful here. We are very confident that the Barbie Cafe can promote our brand image," said the senior manager of Mattel’s Greater China division, Iggy Yip.

The cafe occupies 660 square meters of pink dining space, adorned with fashionable illustrations of Barbie’s outfits on the walls.

The chairs are decorated in a red-corset style lacing and tutus around the seats.

Barbie Cafe also hopes to draw the attention of avid fans from Hong Kong, China and Japan.
