NYC Parking Meters Transformed Into Bike Parking

To solve the problem of declining bike parking, New York City’s Department of Transportation (DOT) came up with an ingenious idea of transforming old parking meters into bike racks.

The DOT will be turning 12,000 meter poles into bicycle racks, following a trial period of decommissioning 200 single-space parking meter poles.

The idea—manufactured and designed by Long Island-based Louis Barbato Landscaping—consists of the rack taking the shape of a circular wheel attached to an old meter pole, giving cyclists an easy time to lock their bikes through the hoops.

This not only gives citizens more easily accessible bike parking, but also helps reuse the unwanted “junk” of the city.
