To make sure that its consumers who live in very hot places without a steady supply of power can also enjoy a refreshing cold drink, Coca-Cola has created the “Bio Cooler”, which is essentially a fridge that operates without electricity.
Developed in partnership with Leo Burnett Colombia, the soda giant’s Bio Cooler is a rectangular device that stands on four legs, with plants on its top. It uses an ancient method to cool air through water evaporation.
The first part of the cooling system is activated when the plants are watered, which triggers evaporation that cools a chamber. This is complemented by a solar-powered mechanism, where heat is captured by a mirror and used to turn a gas into liquid, a process that creates a highly cooling effect.
The Bio Cooler was installed in Aipir, one of the hottest towns in Colombia—the temperature can hit a high of 45 degrees Celsius. This helps to save the residents of Aipir a day’s trip to the city, the nearest place where they could get ice or something cold.
