Disney Introduces RFID Bracelets For Theme Park Visitors

It turns out cash is getting passé.

In the coming months, Disney is doing away with paper tickets and is planning to introduce RFID rubber bracelets for visitors’ convenience.

Called the ‘MagicBand’, the bracelet stores information of its wearer, and is part of the company’s MyMagic+ system that tracks and analyzes visitors’ movements and purchasing behavior, down to the minute details, according to The New York Times.

The wristbands also function as room keys, theme park tickets and credit cards—with it, visitors can unlock their resort hotel room doors, pay for food and souvenir purchases, and use it as a ticket for the theme park’s rides.

As a safety precaution, Disney will also require users to enter a pin code when using MagicBand to make purchases of US$50 or above.

With the MyMagic+ system, visitors can also access a new web or smartphone app, called ‘My Disney Experience’, to preselect three FastPasses (that would get them rides or VIP seating for parades, fireworks and character meet-and-greets), according to The New York Times.
