Outback Steakhouse in Brazil believed that although the internet gave you thousands of friends, it has “killed the happy birthday hugs”, replacing the hugs with “cold” Facebook messages.
So, Outback Steakhouse, a popular birthday celebration destination in Brazil, partnered with ad agency Lew’Lara\TBWA to create the ‘Outback B-Day Chair’.
In outlets across Brazil, the birthday person was invited to sit in the interactive chair. By connecting to the person’s Facebook account, the chair would hug the person for each virtual birthday wish that was posted on Facebook.
The chair would also take a picture of the person being hugged and post it onto Facebook, ensuring that friends who weren’t at the party could also be a part of the celebrations.
Outback hopes that the ‘B-Day Chair’ would reinforce its position as “a place to enjoy special moments while reaching a younger audience through Facebook”.
They plan to install at least one chair in each of their restaurants across Brazil by the end of the year.
