The Norwegian town of Rjukan is shrouded in the shadows of surrounding mountains for five months in a year, making it a dreary place to be during the cold, dark winter.
To bring a little light for residents to bask during these gloomy days, the “Mirror Project” was conceived—with the help of gigantic mirrors installed on the mountains, reflected sunlight will be able to shine down into the town square.
The mirrors have already been mounted by helicopters and the project is waiting to be tested in September, when the sun retreats behind the mountains for its winter break.
This creative solution can be traced back to industrialist Sam Eyde almost a century ago—despite the wait, Rjukan residents are still very enthusiastic about the prospect of a bright spot to gather during the dark winter months.
