Japan has always been big on robotics, and it was only time before they decided to send a robot into space.

Meet ‘Kirobo’—a humanoid “robot astronaut” that is capable of conversing with people “in space and on the ground”.

According to Mashable, the Japanese are planning to send him to the International Space Station on 4 August 2013, where it will take part in the “first robot-to-human conversation in space”.

The robot will come equipped with “voice-recognition technology, natural language processing, facial recognition, a camera, emotion recognition and the ability to speak Japanese”.

Kirobo’s project manager Yorichika Nishijima said, “Russia was the first to go outer space, the US was the first to go to the moon, we want Japan to be the first to send a robot-astronaut to space that can communicate with humans.”
