Penguin’s ‘Philosophy In Transit’ Series Features Photos Of Commuters

Penguin has released a new series ‘Philosophy in Transit’, which is made up of “easily digestible, commute-length books of original philosophy”, according to Creative Review.

To tie in and top off the series’ theme, Penguin art director Jim Stoddart teamed up with designer Matthew Young and photographer Wolfgang Tillmans—to feature close-up shots of commuters on the front cover of each of the four titles: ‘Truth’ by John D Caputo, ‘Event’ by Slavoj Zizik, ‘Self’ by Barry Dainton and ‘Why Grow Up?’ by Susan Nieman.

“[Tillmans] did a very short series of photographs back in 2000 featuring people on the Tube, and these photos just felt like a perfect fir for these books,” Young told Creative Review. “The idea of commuting is used as a metaphor throughout the books to explain philosophical ideas and concepts, plus they’re short S-format editions that are perfect for reading on your way to work, on the Tube perhaps.”
