Photographer Shows The Effects Of War Through Portraits Of Soldiers

Private Chris MacGregor, 24

London-based photographerLalage Snow shows the effects of war through a series of intimate ‘before-and-after’ portraits of soldiers.

Over an eight month period in 2010, Snow travelled between England, Scotland and Afghanistan to document the lives of British soldiers before, during and after their operational deployment in Afghanistan.

The series, titled ‘We Are Not The Dead’, hauntingly captures the “physical and emotion toll” on the soldiers. The images, placed side by side in a triptych, allows us to easily view the transformations that the soldiers undergo.

Each triptych in the series is also accompanied by captions of surprisingly candid interviews that Snow conducted with the soldiers.

‘We Are Not The Dead’ was an attempt to give the soldiers a voice, as Snow felt that they did not have the chance to speak or be listened to.

She said, “I'm interested in how people live in war, and photography is all about giving people a voice. I knew that just like you and me, [soldiers] are people too; they have emotions, feelings, thoughts, favorite TV shows, loving families, homesickness, even fear.”
