You would probably have heard of the saying, “The greatest thing since sliced bread”—but what exactly is so great about sliced bread?
For most of us alive today, we cannot remember a time when bread didn’t come packed in handy, spread-ready pieces—however, we didn’t always have this convenience.
A jeweler from Missouri invented the world’s first bread-slicing machine in 1928—“machine for slicing an entire loaf of bread at a single location”—but it was a baker from St. Louis who perfected it, whose improved design also neatly packaged the sliced bread.
