UK-based designers, Bobby Petersen, Tom Gottelier and Ed Thomas have created ‘temporary’ bicycle helmets using discarded newspapers.
Called ‘Paper Pulp Helmet’, old and unwanted newspapers were collected and blended with water to create a pulp.
An “organic and food safe additive” is then added to the mix that makes the helmets water-resistant from the rain for up to six hours. The helmets are then shaped and baked to remove the water.
According to its website, the helmets were intended for “short periods of use” and can be recycled and “re-pulped into a new helmet without any degradation of the material”.
Each helmet only cost £1 to produce, which makes it “cheaper and more environmentally friendly than anything else on the market”.
