The Real Iron Throne Envisioned By George R.R. Martin For ‘Game Of Thrones’

When you think about the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones, chances are that the image that comes to your mind is the version featured in the popular HBO television series.

While author George R.R. Martin has praised it for its “terrific design” and how “it has served the show very well”, it is still not what he had in mind when he was writing the books.

The original image of the Iron Throne that he had envisioned has been brought to life by artist Marc Simonetti in this awesome illustration—it will be appearing in the forthcoming The World of Ice and Fire history book.

According to Martin, this monstrous version shall henceforth be the definitive image of the Iron Throne—“From now on, THIS will be the reference I give to every other artist tackling a throne room scene…This Iron Throne is scary. And not at all a comfortable seat, just as Aegon intended."

Read Martin’s blog post about the illustration to find out more.
