Inspired by the skyscrapers of megacities, Japanese artist Aki Inomata decided to remodel the homes of hermit crabs in a similar fashion.
Through this series, Inomata shows that hermit crabs are not that different from people as we are always relocating and migrating.
To complete this project, the artist first used CT scanning, which enabled her to perceive all three dimensions of a hermit crab’s shell.
Based on these scans, she produced these shelters which the crabs can actually live in as they are similar to their exoskeleton.
These shells are also transparent, signifying the inherent transience of our own dwellings.
