A Street Art Project That Criticizes Advertising And Consumerism

With the London 2012 Olympics just around the corner, companies are going all out to advertise their products and services on advertising space to the massive number of people travelling to the UK.

Fed up of being suffocated with the volume of adverts on every street corner, a group of art collectives has made it their sworn duty to reclaim UK’s advertising space by replacing billboards with street art.

Called the ‘Brandalism project’, the group comprises of 25 street artists from 8 different countries and they have joined together in an effort to reclaim public space and eliminate ‘visual pollution’.

According to the Brandalism website, it says that it will be the “largest reclamation of outdoor advertising space in UK history as artists challenge the authority and legitimacy of the advertising industry.”

"This exhibition is about trying to open up questions about the ills created by advertising, the false needs and destructive desires it attempts to instil in us, and it is about trying to reclaim some of the spaces taken from us", they added.

The Brandalism project is currently ongoing and more pictures will be uploaded onto their website daily.
