As an experiment with NFC technology, Germany-based digital agency Razorfish hacked an old gumball vending machine and turned it into a virtual goodie box.

Called ‘Digital-Gum-Goods’, the gumball machine was fitted with a Samsung Galaxy Tab, an NFC-shield, a reed switch and two Arduino microcontrollers.

So that when a coin was put into the Digital-Gum-Goods machine, and its lever turned, the machine would distribute digital content—such as apps, movies, songs, eBooks, videos, games and other location-based content—at a tap of an NFC-enabled phone on the release chute.

A charming way to sell and distribute digital content in the physical world.
