Google’s smartphone app team Niantic Labs has released an augmented-reality mobile phone game that turns your real-world location into a virtual world.

In the game, entitled ‘Ingress’, a mysterious energy has been unearthed by European scientists. The origin and purpose of this force is unknown, but some researchers believe it is influencing the way we think.

Players must choose a side: “The Enlightened” seek to embrace the power that this energy may bestow upon us; “The Resistance” struggle to defend, and protect what’s left of our humanity.

In their quest, users must acquire objects, deploy tech to capture territory, and ally with other players.

Ingress would be played out globally, and users can track progress of players around the world, plan their next steps and communicate with others with an “Intelligence map”.

To test the game out, Android users can download it on Google Play
