French design studio Bold-design has come up with a process that could potentially turn sandcastles into permanent residences.
The Memorabilia Factory is a concept kit that can be used to turn sand creations into rock-hard and waterproof sandstone sculptures with the help of bacteria.
By mixing sand with a bacteria solution and calcifying agent, sandcastle builders can turn their fragile architecture into permanent works of art—or if you make them big enough, a new home.
Although the project is still currently a touring art installation, where the technology is used to miniature sand souvenirs for visitors, it is not difficult to imagine how this technology can be used to build cheap, liveable structures.
