To shift public opinion against Puerto Rico reinstating the death penalty, Amnesty International released an anti-capital punishment campaign showing the last meals of executed men who were later proven innocent.

The campaign, shot by photographer James Reynolds, was then printed on tray liners and placed on trays in leading food courts.

The copy on the images read “If you can’t stomach this, act”, prompting people to sign a petition on Amnesty International’s Facebook page.

The second part of the campaign involved setting up a ‘Last Meal Restaurant’, where people were served the last meals of the innocent men. Diners leaving the restaurant were presented with bill with the message “You just had the last meal of an innocent man wrongfully executed. Please show your support against the death penalty by signing our petition”.

Amnesty Internationals’s goal of signatures supporting the petition was surpassed within a month, and newspapers reported a 57% opposition against the death penalty. The Puerto Rican Grand Jury declined the death penalty on the federal case against Alexis Candelario on 23 March 2013.

The campaign, developed by ad agency DDB Latina Puerto Rico, went on to win a Gold Outdoor Lion at Cannes International Festival 2013.
