Dwell magazine recently featured Danish design firm Monstrum, which specializes in building “fun, innovative and well-designed playgrounds”.
Founded by Ole B. Nielsen and Christian Jensen, the playgrounds designed by Monstrum have themes that are influenced by their locations—characteristically eye-catching and whimsical, they attract children to them like bees to honey.
As they are made for children, the creators of these playgrounds also have to ensure that they adhere to the highest safety standards without losing their charm or looking boring—“We would like our playgrounds to look dangerous but to be safe.”
These fantastical play structures are often made with natural materials like wooden boards, which are easily replaced or fixed when broken—they are also designed to encourage exploration and movement.
