Think pole dancing is a sleazy performance art reserved for trashy strip clubs? Well, think again.
Director George Harvey has shot a beautiful black-and-white slow-motion video, featuring UK-based pole-performer and instructor Sarah Scott elegantly spinning and twisting her body around a pole.
Scott uses her upper body strength to twirl and contort herself, and her graceful, acrobatic moves are nothing short of mesmerizing.
In an interview with culture website NOWNESS, the YouTube-taught dancer explained the origins of pole dancing, revealing its evolution from its entertainment beginnings to the fitness routine it is today.
“You have the more exotic-dancer side from the strip clubs and you also have the Chinese pole influence from the circus: they’ve combined to form what it is today. A lot of the influences of the crazier tricks, they come from China, where it is very male-based. The more sensual, creative dance comes from the exotic side. If you put them together with a bit of a fitness background then that creates pole dance as it is today.”
