Bangkok-based photographer Soopakorn Srisakul’s series ‘Mistress’ is a revealing look at the lives of transgender people, or ladyboys, in Thailand.
Srisakul was compelled to embark on his series to strip away preconceptions and prejudices surrounding them, as well as to understand what life is like for his girlfriend, a transgender call girl.
His intimate photographs document her and her co-workers as they go about their work in the city’s infamous red-light district of Nana.
“Because of their unusual appearance and lifestyle, so far removed from the norm of most everyday happening, even if one were to start off with a neutral perspective regarding their life, one really cannot help having some kind of presumption... They, like anyone else, just try to get by. They laugh for joy, cry for sorrow, they work to earn a living, and they have an argument with their boyfriend, just like anyone else.”
