Photographer Captures Tumultuous Moments In Her Relationship In Intimate Photos

Documentary photographer Nadja Wohlleben’s series ‘Heartcore’ explores the rollercoaster of emotions she experienced during tumultuous periods in her relationship.

Described as “conceptual self-portraits and portraits of my partner”, it captures the ups and downs of her passionate love affair, from dizzying heights of ecstasy to moments of anguish.

The blurry and out of focus photographs mirror the confusion, loneliness and yearning Wohlleben felt during the course of the couple’s 6-year relationship.

“The person that makes you feel alive can make you feel like you are dying. Looking in the mirror, my eyes revealed the struggle of losing myself. I felt vulnerable and hurt, yet simultaneously empowered to harm—the one I loved.”

The photographer revealed that working on the series was a cathartic experience as it helped her confront her fears and insecurities.

“Through this project I am working through our problems—finding a therapy for myself in photographing us. This visual relationship diary has helped me deal with issues I thought I couldn’t overcome. It has aided me to forgive, heal, let go of the past, and move on towards a brighter future.”
