Illuminated Mosaic Beneath This Veteran’s Day Memorial Is Only Visible Today

In Arizona, a memorial for US veterans is also a piece of art—when the sun hits the pillars at a specific angle on November 11 at 11:11am, an image of the Great Seal of the United States becomes illuminated.

The symbolic structure was conceived by retired Rear Admiral Ron Tucker and designed by Renee Palmer-Jones. The five pillars represent the five branches of the United States military, and they are surrounded by bricks engraved with the names of 750 veterans.

Palmer-Jones placed a mosaic of the Great Seal of the United States below the pillars, so that once a year, sunlight would project through the oval openings in the pillars and ‘reflect’ the eagle mosaic on the ground.

“The objective of the Anthem Veterans Memorial is that the sun will illuminate every Veterans Day the glory of the American eagle mosaic which lay at the heart of the Memorial that is forever surrounded, loved and protected by our veterans,” explained Palmer-Jones.
