9-Year-Old Boy Sets Up A No-Kill Animal Shelter In His Garage

Ken’s first shelter

A young boy by the name of Ken from The Philippines wanted to set up an animal shelter when he was eight. This idea came about when he heard that most shelter dogs are put down, and that only 20 to 30-percent of these animals are claimed by owners.

”I want to save as many of those dogs as I can from being killed for no reason”, he said, and has since converted his garage into a temporary shelter for these animals.

The boy, who is now nine, posted photographs of himself feeding stray dogs online in February—the pictures soon went viral and many people expressed that they would like to help him with his project.

Although his father had said that setting up a shelter would take years and a lot of money, the boy was not deterred—he managed to get the help of online donors to provide for food and veterinary aid for the dogs that he currently cares for.

According to Ken, these dogs are doing better—“They gained a lot of weight, their open wounds healed, and their fur grew back. They also learned not to be scared of humans”, he said.

With this help, the boy has also leased a 10,000-square-foot lot for one year, which costs US$1,500. His father and some locals are also chipping in to help build the shelter.

If you would like to help with this project, you can make a donation here. We hope to see Ken’s no-kill shelter up and running soon.
