A Sphere Made Up Of Laser-Cut Letters That ‘Prints’ Text By Being Rolled

A Swedish designer by the name of Eric Calderon has come up with a “Typographic Sphere” that lets you “print” letters by rolling it at random.

Calderon glued approximately 2,000 laser-cut letters to the sphere, which was made of birchwood and had a diameter of 20 centimeters. These letters were made in the “Calvert” and the “Akzidenz Grotesk” typefaces, and were applied in 50 hours.

The designer came up with this idea after reading a book about “the relationship between art, typography and crafts”. He wanted to know if he could make the letterpress less tedious and more random—his sphere is a result of this experiment.

This work of art is part of a traveling exhibition titled Ung Svensk Form, and is currently touring Hamburg, Germany.
