When one thinks of whimsical and light-hearted street art, it is unlikely that Tehran, Iran, would be the first place that comes to mind—and yet, that is exactly where you would find the delightful work of artist and designer Mehdi Ghadyanloo.
With the permission of his municipality, his mural-painting company Blue Sky Painters has been doing a fantastic job in transforming the drab, grey street walls into wonderful works of art. Using colorful paint and his obvious talent, the artist has depicted numerous surrealist scenes that would make you stop and stare.
Playful and creative, these murals blur the line between reality and imagination as they often relate to, or even incorporate, their surroundings to tell incredible stories of time-traveling portals and underwater cities.
Perhaps, the most noteworthy aspect of Ghadyanloo’s art is how he uses 3D-painting techniques to create dream-like optical illusions—in one piece, it looks as though it is possible to walk right through a wall as it has been painted with a realistic archway, through which one can see the blue sky.
