It’s estimated that around 30 to 40% of food is thrown away in the US–excess food from supermarkets and restaurants often ends up in landfills, which is a waste of edible food and the resources that went into producing it.
‘PareUp’ is an app created by Margaret Tung, Jason Chen and Anuj Jhunjhunwala that aims to reduce food wastage by connecting people with restaurants and stores that have excess food.
It helps businesses earn from products that normally wouldn’t get sold, and lets people buy perfectly good food that would otherwise be thrown away at lower prices, effectively cutting down on food waste.
The app contains a list of participating stores and an inventory of their products that is updated daily. The retailers will be able to report their excess items and set discounted prices, while consumers can check the app to see what items are available for sale and decide if they want to buy anything.
Set to launch in the summer, it already has tie-ups with Breads Bakery, Oslo Coffee Roasters and PushCart Coffee in New York City.
