Adorable Portraits Of The Descendants Of Ernest Hemingway’s Six-Toed Cats

After working on various food-themed projects, New Zealand photographer Henry Hargreaves has turned his lens on a decidedly more adorable subject: cats.

These are no ordinary felines though; they are the descendants of famed author Ernest Hemingway’s six-toed cats, who reside at his home-turned-museum in Key West, Florida.

He was given a six-toed cat named Snowball by a ship’s captain, and she had passed the polydactyl genes on. There are approximately 40 to 50 such cats who live on the grounds, and they are named after famous people of his time.

Hargreaves had visited the island previously to shoot the annual Ernest Hemingway lookalike contest, and wanted to show a softer side to the late writer.

Amusingly, the photographer observed that while some of the cats reveled in the attention, others fled as though they were trying to evade paparazzi.
