Philadelphia-based artist Alli Katz has been recreating classic album covers with the iconic ‘Etch A Sketch’ toy.
Katz does wonderfully detailed sketches of famous album covers, such as The Beatles’ Abbey Road, and Jimi Hendrix’s Are You Experienced?, which she uploads to Instagram.
The 30-year-old writer and cartoonist discovered her talent when she borrowed her niece’s miniature ‘Etch A Sketch’, and found that she could draw with it as well as with a pen and paper.
The ‘Etch A Sketch’ only allows one line to be created at a time, making the process a time-consuming one, with each drawing averaging 45 minutes to complete. The canvas also means an out-of-place line or misspelled word can’t be rectified; Katz has had to abandon drawings and start over because “there’s no way to cover up mistakes.”
Then there’s the issue of ‘Etch A Sketches’ that don’t work properly—“sometimes the line is too thin, something it’s too thick.”
Katz owns four ‘Etch A Sketches’ and buys new ones regularly, but not before testing them out at the store.
