Directed by film-maker Erik Shirai, The Birth of Saké is a fascinating documentary about the little-known art of saké-making.

To make his film, Shirai spent a year observing the workers at the 144-year-old family-run Yoshida Brewery in northern Japan.

The trailer below examines the 2,000-year-old tradition of making the ubiquitous Japanese rice wine, providing viewers a look at how it is brewed and bottled.

The film is set to debut at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
