Comic illustrator Angela Liao of 20px has created a comic that depicts a simpler time—a time before the hashtag became a ‘#hashtag’.
In her comic, it shows us various things the hashtag was before it was overused in social media. Examples include a number, a tic-tac-toe board and a waffle mold.
“With Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and now even Facebook, social media has taken # to a new level! I hate seeing a #million #words #and #tags as I try to read your status or caption. It annoyed me so much that I refused to use it…but now even I’ve succumbed (sparingly! but still…) It’s getting a little out of control, don’t you think? So, it got me thinking about what a # meant to me before the hash tag ruined it,” wrote Liao.
