Marvel Entertainment is introducing a new superhero: ‘Kamala Khan’, who will also be known as ‘Ms Marvel’.
Khan is a 16-year-old Pakistani-American Muslim girl who lives in Jersey City, and one of her superpowers includes shape shifting.
Inspired by Marvel editor Sana Amanat’s anecdote about growing up as a Muslim-American, the character will not only fight against bad guys, but also reflect on the struggles of growing up in America as a female Muslim teenager.
Created by Marvel editors Sana Amanat, Steve Wacker and writer G Willow Wilson (a Muslim convert), Kamala Khan is about the “universal experience of all American teenagers, feeling kind of isolated and finding what they are” but told “through the lens od being a Muslim-American” with superpowers,” Wilson told NYTimes.com.
“Her brother is extremely conservative. Her mom is paranoid that she’d going to touch a boy and get pregnant. Her father wants her to concentrate on her studies and become a doctor,” Amanat added.
