The reclusive North Korea is perhaps the last place where you would expect a piece of viable technology to originate, but the South China Morning Post recently reported on a “surprisingly impressive” tablet that was launched by the totalitarian state’s Korea Computer Center.
Running on a modified version of Google’s Android operating system, the Samjiyon tablet has been pre-loaded with plenty of ad-free content, including 141 ebooks on topics related to North Korea and even a Korean-language version of “Angry Birds Rio”.
While it cannot access the internet, it does have an option to log on to Kwangmyong, the country’s heavily censored intranet.
Supposedly only available for an elite minority, the Samjiyon costs about UK£155 and could be easily carried out of the country by tourists.

While we do not think that this would be giving the Apple iPad a run for its money any time soon, it is still an interesting development for the tablet market.
