If you work in design, you would probably have heard of renowned graphic designer Michael Beirut, who is a partner at famed design firm Pentagram.

Website Trendhunter pointed us to a keynote address Beirut gave a few years ago, where he “shared five simple secrets for doing great creative work”—the tips he gave are timeless and continue to be relevant for anyone who is creating things and ideas for a living.

He gleaned these secrets to creative success by going through all of the notebooks he has ever kept—there are 86 of them in all, and the oldest one dates back to 1982.

The five secrets are “Listen first then design”, “Don’t avoid the obvious”, “The problem contains the solution”, “Indulge your obsessions” and “Love is the answer”. Beirut elaborated on each point with cases studies from his own portfolio—watch the video below to learn more.
